about vanessa

Vanessa Valero is a textile artist from Colombia. Her work results from the examination of textile-art expression as a dialogue between surfaces and landscapes. She holds a Master’s degree in Textile Design from Aalto University in Finland and over the summer of 2015, completed an internship in Iceland where she learned how to make hand-tuft surfaces. Her encounter with the Scandinavian landscape had a huge impact on her practice and sparked an initmate relationship with nature.

Her creative process is a consciously controlled technique directed in the action of transmitting the rhythm and patterns she finds in the environment. This production of a ‘certain state of mind’ results in the creation of an aesthetic composition with a deep understanding of the dialogue between the raw nature of a tapestry and the landscapes she represents.

Winner of the Carpet and Tapestry Design Competition held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2016, and the Design Biennial in Madrid in 2020. Vanessa’s landscapes live within the limits of the raw material and technique, inviting the viewer into a mystic journey through the Andean mountains and valleys.
